This private gallery on lower Fifth Avenue is the 4,000 square foot residence of a significant art collector. It was designed specifically to display the world's largest and finest collection of 19th century Central Asian Ikat. A traveling exhibition of this collection, "Splendid Silks of Central Asia", recently closed at the Chicago Art Institute and is currently en route to the Denver Art Museum before traveling to Europe and Asia. The loft is designed in a clean classical Modernism intended to mediate between the curatorial requirements of displaying a world-class art collection and the domestic necessities of a warm, inviting residence—a residential gallery. In addition to museum-quality lighting, security, air quality control, and a textile hanging system invented for the project (patent-pending), the primary materials are book-matched mahogany paneling, English kirkstone, and French limestone—all selected to complement the collection. The minimal furnishings are primarily quiet and understated, and include both antiques (a pair of Louis XV chairs, a Regency drum table, Ming occasional tables) and contemporary pieces by Todd Hase, Chris Lehrecke, and Donghia. |
